With these ten dorm essentials, you’ll sleep stress-free
The new academic year is in full swing, and maybe you’re living in a dorm for the first time. Need a list of must-have dorm essentials you can’t live without? We’ve got you covered! Even if you’ve been living in a dorm for a while, it’s worth checking out this list. Imagine still missing something in your dorm life after all this time…
1. Furniture
“Well, duh?! Of course furniture is essential in a dorm,” I can hear you thinking. But surprisingly, many students still sleep with just a mattress on the floor. A mattress on a slatted bed base allows for better ventilation and lasts longer than one directly on the ground. And let’s be honest, nobody enjoys sleeping in the dust. We all know the Ikea store, but if you’re on a budget, don’t forget to check out a thrift store as well.
2. Plants
Did you know that students who have houseplants in their study space experience less stress? So not only do they look nice, but they’re also good for you. Not an expert at watering plants? Go for cacti or succulents, which require little maintenance. Even better, you don’t always have to spend money to get them! Keep an eye on the Facebook group “FreeCircle Houseplants Antwerp and Surroundings”—you might just find your perfect match there.
3. Band-aids
You never think about them, but suddenly you need them: band-aids. And there you are, trying to text your roommates with a bleeding finger or searching on maps for the nearest pharmacy. Make sure you always have some, because even the best chef will eventually cut their finger.
4. Pots and Pans
Monday is for fries, Tuesday is frozen pizza, and Wednesday is the home-cooked meal your parents prepared for you? A real dorm student has to cook every now and then. Invest in a pot, a pan, and maybe a few other kitchen essentials. Not a fan of cooking? Host a “Come Dine With Me” night with three friends and invite each other over to your dorm.
5. Mirror
For a skincare routine or outfit check, you really need a mirror. Take a quick look before heading to class and shine in front of the whole lecture hall. Tip: place your mirror somewhere with plenty of natural light.
6. Condoms
Better safe than sorry? Bringing someone back to your place after a night out is fun, but we’d rather not deal with any unexpected surprises later. The best way to protect yourself against pregnancy or STIs is still using condoms.
7. Decor
Your room is your second home, so feeling good in it is key. Make your space truly yours by adding personal touches. Ever heard of Feng Shui? This Chinese philosophy focuses on the relationship between humans and their living environment. With a few practical tips, you can bring in positive energy. Fresh flowers and decorations with round shapes help, and hanging a nice photo where you can see it when you wake up gives you a boost of energy. Missing your parents, siblings, or pets? Print your favourite photos and hang them on the wall!
8. Scented Candles or fragrance sticks
No one likes to be in a room that doesn’t smell good. Candles also add a cozy vibe to your space. Unpleasant bathroom smells (from your roommates or yourself) can be fixed with an air freshener. Be sure to clean out your fridge regularly to avoid bad smells from spoiled food when you return after the weekend.
9. Cleaning Supplies
Between going to class, working a student job, and a social life, there’s little time left to keep your room clean. Invest in a few tools to make it easier. A small vacuum cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner, and a trash bin for your room. Tip: you might find cleaning supplies in a shared space, so you won’t even have to buy a vacuum.
10. Speaker
Dance along to your favourite artist during a study break, relax with a calming playlist after class, or sing along in the shower. Music is essential! Just be considerate of your neighbours when planning your first party. Let them know beforehand ;).
