The ABC’s of Antwerp for students

The ABCs of Antwerp for students

Studying in Antwerp will probably be the best choice of your life. Started your student life in ‘t Stad? Then a spectacular year awaits you, in which you will discover not only the campus and the auditorium, but also the metropolis that is Antwerp. But hey, you won’t be doing this alone: as always, STAN is your faithful partner in crime. With this alphabet of Antwerp, you’ll be on the right track. And another plus: you will already have 26 Antwerp-related words in your Dutch vocabulary!

A- A- kaart (A-card)

With an A-card in your pocket, you are a real Antwerpoar. This card is your savings card, benefit pass and access card all in one! As a student you can use it for a free library subscription, save up for a free swim or register for youth activities throughout Antwerp. You can get an A-card for free in an Antwerp library and a number of museums. Do you always lose such a physical card? No worries! You can also apply for a digital A-card via the My Antwerp app!  You can find all the info here.

B – Bar hopping (This is the same in English)

As a student in ‘t Stad, you don’t have to wait until Friday to go bar hopping. Did you know that there are around 250 bars in Antwerp? So that means you could (hypothetically) go to a different bar every school day. For all intents and purposes, we don’t recommend this, but the pub culture is a great asset in student life. For beer fanatics, it is definitely worth ordering an Antwerps Bolleke or a Seefbier, but even without alcohol you will have an unforgettable evening in one of the numerous bars.

C – CABIN

CABIN is a brand new, warm meeting place in the heart of the student district. Here you can find peace and quiet, attend workshops, meet other students and find a listening ear if you need one. CABIN is all about self-care: you are welcome here on your good and bad days, to chill out, talk, study, etc. There is always room for coffee and a chat.

Moreover, you can attend inspiring group activities and workshops here, such as stress management during exams, a game night or a sustainable makeover for your dorm. Trust me, this will be a staple in your student life.

D-De Schelde (The Scheldt)

Seeing the lights of the river the Scheldt at night makes our hearts beat faster, this is quoted from a famous Belgian song: but it is the truth! There is nothing cosier than sitting by the water in summer with friends and a nice drink. Both on the left bank on Sint-Anneke beach and on the right bank you will find many chill spots by the water. The quays on the South were recently renovated and are ideal for a stroll. You can also enjoy the skyline in the north of the city. The Droogdokkenpark is located at the bend of the Scheldt and offers views of both the port and the city.

E – Eetcultuur (Eating culture)

‘t Stad has 172 different nationalities (and we are proud of that!). Of course, all these cultures are also reflected on our Antwerp plates: besides our fries and waffles, you can devour international dishes all over the city. Try, for instance, Lebanese at Yalla Yalla; Moroccan at Msemen; Indian at Mission Masala and Asian street food at Knees to Chin. And by the way, you don’t have to go to a restaurant to taste these flavours: Antwerp also has several international supermarkets where you can gather all the foreign ingredients yourself like at Sun Wah. Prefer to stay close to home? Then try the Antwerp Handjes, biscuits typically from here. Why a hand, you ask? Check out the story of ‘hand throwing’ at the Q of ‘Quartiers’.

F- Feesten (Partying)

Antwerp does not have a traditionally concentrated nightlife area like some other cities, but that is what makes it unique. Of course there is student bar De Prof, with legendary status within the Antwerp student district, but you can also find a nice party outside. From cosy pubs to vibrant clubs and everything in between. Whether you like techno, R&B or catchy sing-alongs, there is always something to do. Clubs like Lima, Red&Blue and Club Vaag welcome you with open arms and focus on students during the week. Want to expand your choices even more? Then stick around in ‘t Stad during the weekend too. From Friday night, venues like Kasko, Garage and Leienpaleis throw their doors wide open.

G – Gebouwen (Buildings)

There is no shortage of iconic buildings. You probably already saw the cathedral and the train station. But did you already take a look at the trade fair near the Meir? And did you know that the Boerentoren was one of Europe’s first skyscrapers? Those who are fans of beautiful houses can stroll through the Cogels-Osylei. The boulevard in Berchem is full of beautiful villas built in the last century. The MAS, the Havenhuis and the Pakhuis are also a must-see.

H- Haven (Port)

When you think of Antwerp, you also think of the port! Thanks to Port of Antwerp, Antwerp has become a true metropolis, linking countries and cities economically. A little history lesson: Antwerp has been a port city since the 12th century, but in the 16th century Antwerp grew to become the centre of the world economy. Over the years, our port has remained important, even during the First and Second World Wars. The port has also continued to expand to become Belgium’s largest port. Would you like to learn more about our port? Then visit Portopolis at the MAS, a free interactive visitor centre!

I- Identiteit (Identity)

Finding your own identity in a city like Antwerp is a process of exploring, discovering and expressing yourself within a city rich in history, culture and diversity. Antwerp offers a unique mix of elements that can help you form your personal identity. Explore in a student union or go on your own in every corner of the city to find what you like and what interests you. From the many sports opportunities to playing board games in a café, from trendy bars to inspiring museums, from shopping in the cutest second-hand shops to high-end fashion in the chic boutiques. The city offers something for everyone. Antwerp is not only a city of culture and history, but also a place where you can be yourself and make new friends in an open and inclusive atmosphere. Discover who you really are, what suits you and what brings you joy!

J- Jobs (Idem in English)

Antwerp is the ideal place for job students. ‘t Stad is dynamic, vibrant and has endless opportunities for students who want to combine their studies with a student job. Whether you are looking for a job in hospitality, retail or maybe even in the creative sector… There is something for everyone! Keep an eye on the online vacancies at the City of Antwerp, or regularly check the sites Student.be and Jobat.be. You can also join groups on Facebook such as ‘Studentenjobs in Antwerp’.  Get out there too. Check the streets for vacancies or dare to walk in somewhere for a spontaneous job application. You already have a ‘no’, you can get a ‘yes’! In Antwerp, there is always work to be found somewhere. Last but not least, come and work with us! At STAN we are constantly looking for new top people. Work in the editorial department as a social media wizard or copywriter, at the reception desk, as an attendant at STUDY360 or on StuDay! Be sure to check our website or social media for vacancies!

K- Korting (Discount)

Discount is pretty much a student’s favourite word. The two go hand in hand: in Antwerp (and beyond), you can often count on a nice student discount! At museums, sports clubs, theatre, restaurants… A few places where you get a discount are Wasbar, Dr Martens, Monki and Flixbus. Don’t see that student discount on the price list right away? It’s always worth asking about it. Apart from the shops, you can also fix discount packages at Guido, Student Beans and student.be . These organisations create deals to save your student budget. For the culture lovers among us, there are also a lot of discounts. At De Studio, Monty and Toneelhuis, for example, you have discounts on all performances for -26-year-olds.

L- Linkeroever (Literally the left bank of the city)

Student life in Antwerp mainly takes place on the right bank, but there is also a lot to do on the other side of the water. How do you make the crossing to the left bank? You can take the free ferry between ‘Linkeroever’ and ‘Rechteroever’  or you can take the Waterbus! Prefer to walk yourself? That’s convenient, because you can also take the pedestrian tunnel ‘De voetgangerstunnel’ on foot or by bike! The tunnel is truly a historical gem in Antwerp, with its iconic wooden escalators and white wall tiles under De Schelde, this is a must do!

On the left bank, you’ll find the green areas Middenvijver and the Rot, where you can go for walks or bike rides. In the mood for sports? On the left bank you will find the skate park or the Finnish running track overlooking the sailing lake Galgenweel. Don’t forget the Sint-Anneke recreational beach, the outdoor swimming pool De Molen, the marina, etc. Something for everyone!

MMusea (Museums)

KMSKA, FOMU, MOMU, MAS … Like us in this article, museums are also fans of the alphabet. Can’t see the wood for the trees? This site lists all Antwerp museums. From fashion to diamonds and from photography to chocolate, there is something for everyone. No time during the day for a museum visit? KMSKA opens every Thursday evening until 10pm. For a whopping 59 euro, you can visit 245 museums in Belgium all year round with the Museumpass! So it’s definitely worth checking it out. Be sure to check out the student discount before you buy a ticket, in museums like Plantin Moretus, DIVA, and Red Star Line a ticket costs less than 10 euro!

N – Netwerken (Networking)

Networking in Antwerp? Yes yes yes! ‘t Stad offers students opportunities to expand their network and make valuable contacts. The city has a vibrant student community, with numerous events, meetups and networking opportunities specifically aimed at young professionals and students. Whether you are looking for work experience, collaboration opportunities or just want to meet new people, Antwerp offers something for everyone. This can be done through student associations, job fairs, networking events, etc. Be sure to search what events your educational institution offers! You can also expand your network as a volunteer. On giveaday.be, you can find a lot of options for volunteering.

O – Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal (Cathedral of Our Lady)

Antwerp’s cathedral, an icon in the city. At 123 metres, you can see the tower from far away. Together with the Boerentoren, it defines the city’s skyline. Admire the Gothic structure’s architecture and paintings by Rubens. At night, the cathedral is beautifully lit.

P – Parken (Parks)

Those who spend too much time in grey classrooms occasionally need some greenery. Luckily, there are parks to the rescue. Go chill by the pond of Stadspark, invite your friends for a picnic in the Te Boelaer Park or take a walk in Middelheimpark. If you like sports, Park Spoor Noord is the place to be. There is a skate bowl and you will find courts for basketball, volleyball and cricket. Rather a fan of swimming? You can do so in the pond of Boekenberg Park. And for those for whom all these parks are too small, we recommend a visit to Linkeroever or Rivierenhof.

Q – Quartiers (Neighbourhouds)

As in any city, Antwerp has many different neighbourhoods, each with its own unique vibe. From the trendy Eilandje and the working-class Borgerhout to the modern Nieuw Zuid and the multicultural Seefhoek. Obviously we know the student district inside and out, but it is definitely worth exploring the other quartiers.

A beautiful gem not to be missed is Zurenborg. In that district you will find the Cogels-Osylei, the most beautiful street in Antwerp. You’ll also find the Dageraadplaats, the ideal spot for a bite to eat or a drink. In the historic centre, you will discover the history of our beautiful city. Get lost in the cobblestone streets until you come across the Grote Markt with its medieval guild houses and beautiful city hall. In the centre of the market you’ll see the statue of Brabo, the hero who defended Antwerp against the naughty giant Antigoon. He throws Antigoon’s hand far away. Fun fact: the name ‘Antwerp’ comes from ‘hand throwing’.

You may have noticed that quite a few street corners in the city centre have a statue of Mary. Mary is the city’s patron saint and statues are a way of honouring the saints. The oldest date back to the late 17th century and in the city centre you can still find some 160 of them. You will also find them in the student district, spotting them on the way to campus.

Another fascinating district is the Diamond Quarter. The most beautiful gems here are, of course, the Central Station and the Opera House. Also visit the fascinating Jewish quarter here and try a pastry from the famous bakery Kleinblatt or go to Chinatown! Each district is definitely worth a visit!

R – Rivierenhof (Literally the park of rivers)

Want to escape the busyness of the city life for real? Then take your bike or tram and come chill out in Rivierenhof. This is Antwerp’s largest and oldest provincial domain and is perfect for walking, running, picnicking, using the outdoor gym or meeting up with friends. There’s even a children’s farm! Bar Stark, a mega cosy coffee bar is also not to be missed!

S – Sport (Sports)

No shortage of sports opportunities. On the city of Antwerp’s website, you will find mapped running and walking routes, the city has 10 swimming pools and public sports grounds everywhere. As a student, you can buy a sports sticker at a reduced price. This sticker gives you access to the full range of sports on offer for Antwerp students. From rugby and basketball to yoga and BBB. You can also rent sports halls at a reduced rate. Definitely worth checking out!

T – Theater (Theatre)

If you are a fan of theatre, Antwerp is the place to be. From musicals to tragicomedies, it’s all here. At the heart of Antwerp is the bustling Theatre District, a place where culture and history come together. On the theatre square you will find the Stadsschouwburg. A few streets away are the Arenbergschouwburg and the beautiful Bourlaschouwburg. In other parts of the city you will also find large and smaller theatres. Have you heard of De Singel? It is an international arts campus for dance, music, theatre and architecture. Close to the Mechelseplein you will find De Studio. The cultural hotspot has an extensive programme; besides theatre, there are film screenings, exhibitions and parties. Whoever hears ‘opera’ might think of the metro station, but did you know that Flanders’ largest opera house is in Antwerp? Fans of stand-up comedy can go to The Joker, a café on Kleine Markt. Every Wednesday and Sunday evening, you will find big and less big names from the comedy world.

U – Uniek (Unique)

Antwerp is a unique student city. Whether you explore its cosy districts, enjoy its lively markets, or take an evening stroll along the Scheldt, Antwerp always offers a new experience that makes the city unforgettable.

The city breathes history: from the impressive Cathedral of Our Lady to the centuries-old Grand Place. Over the centuries, Antwerp has made a name for itself worldwide, with countless historical figures shaping and enriching the city. But Antwerp is not only famous for its rich history. The city also has a vibrant, contemporary culture that manifests itself in fashion, art and architecture. As a fashion capital, Antwerp has produced the world-famous Antwerp Six. Meanwhile, the city remains a hotbed of creativity and style. The diamond district, the beating heart of the world’s precious stone trade, means there is no city like Antwerp.

‘t Stad has a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. You can wander its historic streets, after which you’ll soon find yourself in trendy, modern neighbourhoods. The city has an international appeal due to the many cultures that meet there. As many as 172 different nationalities live together.

V – Vintage (idem in English)

Antwerp is Belgium’s fashion city. Many famous designers studied at the Antwerp Academy. You may have heard of the ‘Antwerp Six’, iconic designers who gained international fame. Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester are two of them. Those who want to shop have plenty of choice. The largest and most famous shopping street is the Meir. You’ll find all the well-known international chain shops there. Nationalestraat and its side streets are known as the Fashion District. You’ll find mostly high-end shops there, very posh. Nearby is Kammenstraat, where you’ll find many trendy shops. Those looking for trendy concept stores can take a look at Zuid. Vintage shops can also be found all over town. Buying second-hand clothes is good for the climate and your wallet. Sounds like a dream. Is your room getting too small for all those clothes? Then consider donating some pieces to the thrift shop and give them a second life. If you want to immerse yourself in Antwerp’s fashion scene without consuming yourself, visit the ModeMuseum (MoMu).

W – Wonen (Living)

Kot life, best life. Being a student in a dorm brings many advantages. It is the chance to become independent. You not only learn how to look after yourself, but also how to organise your time, cook meals and manage your budget. It is a perfect preparation for ‘real life’! You also get a lot of freedom: you have your own place, set your own rules and choose how you spend your days. Often, going to a dorm also means living with others, which boosts your social skills. You learn to deal with different personalities and make new friends. In short, not only will you study, but you will also grow as a person – an adventure you don’t want to miss! Still looking for student accommodation? Take a look at kotweb.

Is only yoga not doing the job? In this article you will find more info on where to go when it becomes too much mentally.

Z – Zoo (idem)

Antwerp Zoo has been around since 1843, making it the oldest in the country. You can visit 365 days a year and, as is often the case, you get a student discount. You’ll find the monumental entrance next to the equally monumental railway station. You are not in a dorm and take the train every day? Lucky you! That means you walk through the most beautiful station in the world every day. Antwerp-Centraal is number one, all Belgians unanimously agree. The stone station building is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and stands 75 metres tall with its dome. You probably also saw the red, steel platform roof.
